It was happily munching away on something. So cute. （北八ヶ岳を散歩していた時、ニホンリスさんがいた。 何やら美味しそうに頬張っている。可愛いなぁ。） Maybe it was wary of me, because it quickly ran off...Apparently, when Japanese squirrels have more food than they can eat, they hide the extra food underground. This behavior is called “caching.” （警戒心が強いのかすぐに逃げてしまった。。。 ニホンリスは餌を食べきれない時に、土の中に隠す「貯食」という行動をするらしい。） What a clever little animal. （とっても頭が良い動物なんだなぁ。） But when I looked into it a little more, I found out that: “They often forget where they cached their food, and the seeds and nuts they bury sometimes sprout.” （でも、よくよく調べてみると、 「貯食した場所を、しばしば忘れてしまう。土の中に埋められた、種や実が発芽することも」と。） That happens, right? Humans forget things too, so of course squirrels do as well!
